Summer Solstice Bivvy

Join us for our annual bivvy in the Pentland Hills to celebrate the longest day of the year (almost)! Bivvying is sleeping outside without a tent- you can do this either in a specially made bivvy bag or a survival bag although the latter can get a bit sweaty!
The plan is to meet at the Harlaw Reservoir carpark at 7.30pm and walk up to Bell’s Hill (about 3km) where we will eat dinner and spend the night. Feel free to bring some drinks to enjoy along with dinner but remember you will need to carry everything in and out! There will be nowhere to fill up water at our campsite so please carry what you will need for a night on the hill (at least 1 litre plus whatever you need for cooking) The next morning, we will walk a slightly different route back past Thriepmuir Reservoir for a swim for anyone who is interested.
This event is open to anyone whether you are an experienced camper or completely new at this but you will need all your own kit. I’ve made a rough kit list below but you might want to adjust this depending on your own needs and preferences. Remember that sleeping in a bivvy is much colder than in a tent bring LOTS of warm layers! If you are keen to join but a bit unsure don’t hesitate to ask any questions!
If the weather looks truly awful (lots of rain or high winds) we may need to move or cancel this event.
Kit List:
– Sleeping bag (with liner for extra warmth)
– Sleeping mat
– Bivvy bag or survival bag
– Hat to keep your head warm coz its sticking out the bag
– Dinner (either cold food or easy to cook camping food and a stove/fuel to cook it)
– Breakfast (as above)
– Enough water for cooking and drinking
– You may also want to bring teabags/ instant coffee to make hot drinks if you bring a stove
– Snacks
– You will need warm waterproof clothes for hillwalking and to wear overnight but could just wear your walking clothes to bed
– Toothbrush and other toiletries
– A spade and toilet paper in case you need to go to the loo (although the public loos at Harlaw may be open). Additionally a ziplock bag to pack out loo roll instead of needing to bury it might be a good plan.
– Swimming costume and towel for Saturday morning swim if you are interested.
For anyone coming from Edinburgh I can give lifts from the city centre!
