Welsh Slate Mining Adventure

Join Love Her Wild for a special Slate Mining adventure in Wales. Start with a tour 500 feet into the mountain where you will learn about mining history in the area, led by the men and boys that used to mine as a job. Then head to the hills as a group for a hike and wild camp under the stars.

The Plan

Travel into the belly of Llechwedd’s mountain on the steepest cable railway in Britain! On this award winning Deep Mine tour you’ll experience some of the iconic sounds which have defined the last century and a half. The clock will turn back 160 years as you travel 500 feet underground. You’ll meet the mine’s owner and founder John Whitehead Greaves, and some of the men and boys who spent up to 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, working underground in semi-darkness.

Following the tour, the group will head into the hills for a hike and wild camp. The walk starts and finishes in Blaenau Ffestiniog and goes up round the peaks through all the old mine workings and reservoirs. It will be approx 8 miles but we will stop half way for a wild camp.

The next morning after breakfast, the team will pack down camp and complete the 8 mile loop finishing around midday.

You will need a basic level of general fitness (and able to carry your own bag) but won’t have needed to have mountain experience as it’s not a really hard hike and we have plenty of time in which to do it.

Packing list

– Lightweight small tent
– 2 season sleeping bag
– Camping stove plus fuel (if you prefer you can have a ‘cold’ dinner instead of cooking)
– 1 change of clothes (Suitable to sleep in too)
– Hat and gloves
– Head torches
– Toiletries & personal first aid kit
– Walking boots
– Walking socks (and spare pair)
– Food and snacks
– 2 litres of water
– Mobile phone / camera 

Who is leading this expedition

This expedition is being led by Love Her Wilder, Jan Phillips. An experienced mountain leader and mum to 2 ‘almost grown up children’, Jan grew up on a farm in North Wales and knows the area very well. Jan works as a dental nurse during the week for the NHS……until Friday evening comes and the fun begins!
