The National 3 Peaks Challenge: A Supportive Women-Only Team Event

Fundraising for Love Her Wild CIC – 25 – 27 September 2026

Scafell Pike, Lake District – 978m – Distance 8.5km/Time 4 hours

Training for the Three Peaks:

FAQ’s

How Long is the National Three Peaks Challenge?

Total Challenge Window: 24 Hours. Total hiking time: Up to 14 hours total across all three mountains. Ben Nevis (5-6 hours). Scafell Pike (3-4 hours). Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) (4-5 hours). Driving time: 10 hours fixed allowance. Important: No matter how long the driving actually takes on the day, we will only ever count 10 hours towards the challenge time. If driving takes less than 10 hours, that buffer simply gives breathing space.

If I need the toilet, where do I go?

We plan this carefully and realistically: Before and after each moutain, using public toilets where available, and petrol stations during refuelling stops (these will be quick stops). During the mountain hike – There are no toilets on the mountains so a discreet wild wee may be necessary. We will brief you on how to do this respectfully and responsibly.

What If I need to come down part way through a moutain?

Your safety comes first. If you feel unwell, exhausted, injured or unconfortable continuing, one of our guides will escort you down safely. You will not be left alone and this decision is always supported. There is no pressure to push beyond your limits. If you decide to stop, you will stay with the base team on the minibus for the remainder of the challenge.

What if I can’t complete the challenge?

This happens – and it’s absolutely ok. Completing all three peaks is an achievements, and attempting the challenge is still a success. If you need to stop we will log the peaks you have completed, and you will be supported for the remainder of the event. Many participants come away incredibly proud regardless of the final outcome.

Can I be dropped at the train station?

Yes, where possible. We can arrange a drop-off at a suitable train station if you need to leave early or withdraw. This must be discussed with the lead guide, and fit safely within the route and schedule. This is only in the event of an emergency or a situation where you need to leave.

Do I need to bring extra food for the mountains?

If you wish. We will give you high-energy, easy to eat foods for the hiking, such as energy bars, trail mix, glucose gels or chews, sweets/chocolate for quick energy. Main meal before/after each mountain. Top tip: If you ensure you eat before and after each mountain, you won’t need to each much during the hike itself. We will help you with this. You’ll have opportunities to eat between mountains and during brief vehicle stops.

What size rucksack do I need?

Maximum size 30 litres (anything bigger and you’ll be carrying too much which will slow you down). Maximum packed weight 8kg (out team will carry safety kit so you don’t have to).

What should I carry on the actual mountain?

Your mountain rucksack should include: 2 Litres of water (minimum). Waterproof jacket and trousers. Warm layer (fleece or insulated jacket). Hat/cap (warm or sun protection depending on conditions). Snacks. Any personal medication. Hiking poles (optional but recommended). Your guide will confirm kit checks before each ascent.

What happens to my overnight back during the challenge?

Your overnight bag stays securely in the vehicle throughout the challenge. Bag limits: 1 x duffle bag per person. Maximum size 90 litres. Includes your rucksack. Maximum combined weight 20kg per person.

Where is the best place to stay?

We recommend you choose accommodation near Fort William for the Friday night. There are local bunkhouses available if you choose to travel in a group and share the cost of the accommodation. There are also lovely Air BnB’s in Fort William. If you are staying after the challenge then Llanberis is the ideal location as this is where we’ll finish. Please do not book any accommodation until checking with Love Her Wild that we have enough sign-ups for the event to go ahead.

Where do we finish?

We will finish in Llanberis, Snowdonia after a short shuttle ride from Pen Y Pass (where we finish walking). We will arrive at the Royal Victoria Hotel after the challenge where you will be awarded your certificates and badges, with the option for you to buy food and drinks if you wish. We’re happy to suggest locations once your event logistics are confirmed.

What happens if we don’t all complete the challenge within 24 hours?

Our goal is always to help everyone finish the challenge within 24 hours. but this depends on the whole team working together and moving at a sustainable pace. We understand that sometimes participants may need to slow down or take breaks. If the 24-hour window is reaching before everyone completes, we will continue hiking safely and supportively to finish the climbs. Completing the challenge, regardless of exact timing, is a huge achievement and absolutely worth celebrating. Please don’t put pressure on yourself to meet the 24-hour mark. Finishing within that time is a fantastic bonus, but your safety and enjoyment come first.

Final reassurance

This challenge is about safety, teamwork and steady progress, not rushing or pressure. Our planning is desiged so you can: Focus on one mountain at a time, feel supported throughout, have a safe, memorable and well-managed experience. If you have any questions not covered here, just ask – we’re here to help.
