Introduction to Navigation

This is a one day navigation course led by Kirsty Robb, a fully qualified and insured Mountain Leader. It is suitable for complete beginners to navigation but you will need to be able to spend all day out on the hills, including walking off path. This course is also suitable for people who want to refresh basic navigation skills.
 
The course will be held in the Lowther Hills. The exact location and meeting time will be confirmed closer to the time.
 
On this course you will learn:
· Use of different map scales -1:50000 and 1:25000
· Setting the map
· Measuring distance on the map and on the ground
· Understanding timing and pacing to estimate distance travelled
· Feature and contour interpretation
· Identification and use of “tick-off” and” catching” features
· Use of grid references to identify your location
· Basic use of a compass
 
COST: £50 per person (a donation from each booking will be donated to Moffat Mountain Rescue Team)
Instructor to participant ratio: 1:6
